Radio Wave Propagation

"Radio amateurs have been interested in the study of radio propagation since the early days of radio. Amateurs have sought to understand how different factors affect radio waves as they travel from one place ot another. The height of your antenna above ground, the type of antenna used, the frequency of operation, the terrain, the weather and the height and density of the ionosphere ... all affect how radio waves travel." -- The ARRL General Class License Manual, Chapter 3, page 3-1.
